((OOC-Let's keep this limited to those of us who are here at least once a week? I don't want it to die...))

Ayla stumbled as her foot sank a little further into the sand than she had expected. She came down hard on one knee, but hardly felt the impact. She pulled herself up and relentlessly continued on her way. It was a patter she had already accepted days ago upon entering the desert. No matter how far or how long she traveled through the sands, Ayla was just too used to the forests of Du Weldenvarden to be able to focus on her step here in the dunes of the vast Hadarac. It was a strange feeling, to go from being so graceful that you took it for granted, to being so clumsy.

After a day or so, Ayla had given up. She would take a few falls here and there. It was no big deal for now. Falling did nothing but bruise her skin, so it was of no concern to her. She kept going. But to where, she hadn’t a clue.

The journey had begun as a quest to find the band of slavers that had left Uru Baen and headed out to gather more slaves to sell. This time they had headed through the desert, probably headed for the mountains where a few families sometimes moved to escape the bad conditions within the Empire. They were very easy targets. Ayla intended to stop it from happening this time. Although she was tired, there was no chance that she would quit the trail. She also had revenge on her mind...

Memories of the hard times she had seen flooded her mind. Being captured by slavers. Having her powers sealed. Her leg broken and unhealed for years. Mistreatment, first by the slavers, then by various owners, and finally by the humans she lived among for so long before being rescued from her miserable existence. It filled her with rage, thinking about what the innocent people these slavers were after would go through at their hands.

She sped up her pace, forgetting to stumble now that she allowed instinct to guide her. Ayla had not yet learned that she could rely on her senses and instincts much more than she allowed herself. It was natural to her, so long as she did not over think things. But Ayla’s mind was always on something, and so she usually made things much harder for herself without knowing it.

An hour later, Ayla finally came to the rise of a great dune of sand and could make out the mountains ahead. Once she reached them, Ayla could once again pick up the trail of the slavers and catch up to them. Reckless as ever, Ayla intended on dealing with the group on her own. It was her fight: these were the very same men whom had held her captive so long ago. She hadn’t even told Jacen what she intended to do. This was something she needed to do herself, and she would die trying if that’s what it would take. Pride and youth, some would say. The curse of a child. But Ayla’s youth was very much buried now. She had the mind of an adult, if not the training. She pressed on until she reached the mountains, worked her way into the slowly-thickening tree growth, and walked toward a large pine, finally allowing herself to rest.

But her rest was cut short. Moments later Ayla’s eyes snapped open and she gazed through the trees toward a soft sound. Someone was approaching. Ayla had just enough time to regain her feet before they came upon her, and Ayla was not going to sit still long enough to ask questions of a stranger. There was very little chance that anyone would be out this far, so odds were that this was an enemy. She unsheathed her swords and attacked.

Vraizan had tailed the figure solely out of interest. He had meant no harm but when he saw the figure fly through the bush towards Fledryn. Vraizan pulled his sword out and felt a jarring jolt run up his arm.
"We mean you no harm" Vraizan gasped.
He withdrew the sword protecting Fledryn and his arms fell to his sides.
"We were following you through pure interest."

(OOC - Sorry it's so short but I couldn't think of what else to write....next one'll be longer...brownies honour...lmao)

OOC-I’m really sorry it took me so long. Now, umm... How should I go about this? I need to change my post from the slavers attacking her to just a few people I guess. Do you want an attack on them afterwards or should they go off to find the slavers together? We need a plan.

And don’t worry about post length. I’m sure I won’t be able to keep them long either.

((OOC-That works for me. :D Changed the last paragraph of my earlier post.))

Ayla lowered her swords, looking over the man before her. She didn’t know what to think of him, but she recognized the attempt at peace. He had lowered his sword, but not sheathed it. Ayla acted in kind, keeping her swords down but ready to deflect an attack. She wasn’t accustomed to trusting strangers.

“That leaves me wondering who you are, and, if you do not mean me harm, what are you doing out here?” She could see that this man was indeed an elf, but why would one of her race be so far from Du Weldenvarden? “My name is Ayla, by the way.”

"My name is Vraizan. I awoke in the desert and things lead to more things and my men here had to come out and assist me."

Vraizan sheathed his sword, instincts telling him he was in no danger

"And You?"

He let his thoughts drift back to the dwarf. He had been sad to see the dwarf go but he thought that he would meet the little man again.

He turned to his men "Stand down men"
Looking at Ayla he invited her to sit down with him and eat a quick meal of Elven breads and vegetables.

OOC:Sorry about the time...I was at a training week with the Army and had no access.

Ayla accepted his offer, sheathing her blades as his own men sheathed their own. She sensed no ill intent from these people. Unless they were carefully concealing their feelings, even guarding their own heartbeats to make certain she could not feel any deception by it, they were not here to harm her. She would have to give a little trust in this.

Ayla sat down, enjoying the first meal she had been able to consume since early morning. And the fact that this was a diet she was comfortable with helped her to lose some of her tension. She allowed herself to relax a bit, becoming herself again instead of the warrior she sometimes felt she became in tense circumstances like an attack. Once she finished eating she began her explanation.

“There are slavers about. These are ruthless men, but cowards all the same. I have some unsettled business with them.” She did not go into detail on this, feeling ashamed that it had happened at all. But she felt the need to warn these strangers both that slavers might be about, and to stay out of her way. If they did not like being so near where slavers might be stalking, they could leave. But Ayla would not allow them to try and turn her away from what she meant to do. No one could change her mind on this.”

((OOC-No problem.))

The woman sat down and explained her situation. Vraizan thought, at least, what she would tell of it. He felt he knew the story without her finishing it. He had also picked up on a bad limp in her leg.

Once more his thoughts drifted to the Dwarf. Why had he went off in the night like that. Could he have been needed by his people. Perhaps the Dwarves were in trouble. He hadn't been in contact with his own people, save the men with him, for over a month. Perhaps this woman knew something of the troubles of Alagaesia.

"When did you last have contact with any form of civilization?"

Ayla shook her head. “It’s been a while,” she answered honestly. I’ve been on the slavers’ trail for almost three months. They have managed to stay ahead of me thus far, but I am closing in on them now. Sorry, but I have no idea what might have been happening in the world since I left Uru Baen. What is it you want to know, though? Perhaps I might have heard some rumor while in the city.”

What was making this man so nervous, she wondered. Whatever it was, it might prove to be a problem for her in the future. If she could help solve it now, perhaps she need not worry about it any further...

"Iwas just wondering if you'd heard about something to do with the war. My men had left Ellesmera to meet me around two weeks ago. They know of several skirmishes in the war if you're interested, but other than that we are as disconnected from civilization as you are."

He glanced at Fledryn. "Send out 2 of the boys to scout around, see if they can't find anything to do with these slavers. We might as well help this lady here. She is fellow kindred after all. That is of course, if you do not object."
He looked at her...

Ayla hesitated. She didn't want to draw anyone into her problems. Besides, she had a score to settle here. These men had nothing to do with it. But she wouldn't object to a little help in finding the slavers, she decided. It would cut down the time she spent searching for the bastards.

"Thank you. But I won't draw you into my fight. If you can decided on which direction they went, it would help. Otherwise I'll just track them down later."

"If you are sure. I mean, I could tell my men to knock them all out and you could do with them as you wished. (shove a stick where the sun don't shine, that sort of thing). I just don't like the idea of leting a woman out to fight a group of, what say, twenty men, even such a tough lady as yourself."

A sudden movement caught Vraizan's eye. He turned to see his scouts returning.
"Sir, there are remains of campfires and sh** to the North-East. These slavers aren't the best at espionage."
Vraizan nodded. Turning back to Alya he clapped his hands. "Last offer..."

Ayla laughed. "As much as I enjoy your company, I cannot ask you to risk yourselves. I will take care of this myself. Thank you for the help, though." Ayla tried to keep her enthusiasm to herself. It was about time she caught up to them! And now it wouldn't be long before she finally taught them never to mess with an elf.

"If I can ever help you out, let me know. I would be glad to return the favor anytime." She looked to Vraizan questioningly.

Vraizan nodded "as you wish...."

He watched the woman out of sight, then turned to his men.
Fledryn looked him in the eye "Vraizan?"

"You know what I'm thinking don't you?"

"I reckon so, brother"

"Lads, get ready. Stay in the shadows. Let no-one, not even your kin next to you, spot you or your trail. We move quietly but speedily. As you were trained!" Vraizan ordered.

He sprinted of lightly into the forest, crouching slightly, holding his longsword away from his leg, to stop it clinking. He made sure his shortswords and his bow were tied tightly against his back to minimise the shuffling.

((OOC-You know that’s not what I want. :D)

Ayla hurried forward, intent on finally finding the men responsible for so many years of misery in her life. It was now or never. She slid silently through the landscape, moving as if a shadow flickering among the trees. Her twin swords had been crafted so as to make no sound unless they were unsheathed, and even that could be avoided if the user knew enough of them to shift them slightly to the left along the padded end of the sheath instead of allowing the sharp edges and side to scrape along the metal of the case.

It did not take long to find their trail. These slavers belonged to no army nor organization that trained them in stealth. It was not even something they worried about. Slavery was not a crime in the eyes of the Empire. They had nothing to fear. Or, at least, as far as the law was concerned. In Ayla’s case, they had everything to fear. They just didn’t know it yet.

She waited until the slavers had settled in around their fires for the night. The darkness would aid her, since humans had worse eyesight in the dark. Still, she did not look too hard for any tactics to allow herself an advantage. She was an elf: that was advantage enough when dealing with human combatants that were not properly trained. Any more advantage and she might as well have been fighting children.

Ayla walked out of the darkness and into the light of the fire, not even bothering to unsheathe her blades beforehand. There was a rush of feet and men everywhere stood quickly and the sound of twenty or so blades being pulled from their sheaths. Then the leader stepped forward.

“Just what do you think you’re doing here, woman? You’re a long way from home...”

“What, you don’t recognize me?” At the dumbfounded looks Ayla shook her head. “Oh, that’s right. I guess you have taken so many men, women and children from their peaceful lives to become slaves that you would not bother to remember their faces. Well, perhaps you will remember better if I explain what happened. Do you remember a time many years back when you decided to ambush a small elven girl and seal away her powers? Do you remember selling this girl to a merchant and gaining a heavy price for her?”

At last the man seemed to recall her. He took an involuntary step back. “You. Well, one elf is nothing to fear now. I have enough men to take one elf on.”

“You know nothing of elves.”

“Attack!”

And then began the fighting. Ayla didn’t worry this time about casualties: These men often killed those who would protect their wives and children against slavery. And Ayla still remembered some of these men and their rough treatment of all their prisoners. She spared them nothing. One man fell away with a hole gouged in his chest, another came away with his head severed from the rest of him. Ayla continued to fight as the men swarmed around her. If left to their ow, she was sure that even they could find some advantage. But she didn’t intend to give them time to think She changed tactics swiftly now and then, full-out attack for a few seconds, feints and dodges the next. It was impossible for anyone to tell what she might do next.

The only trouble came when the leader she despised above all joined the battle. This one had some skill beyond the rest of his men. He alone could hold his own against her, but only because of the distraction his men bought him. Ayla found herself dueling the man and trying to dodge the attacks of the fifteen men left to him. It was anyone’s guess whether she could manage to pull this off now. But Ayla refused to back down. She poured even more fury into her blows, determined not to die here.
