Jacob nodded, "alright then, Uru'baen it is." Jacob lay down onto the hard ground only slightly comforted by the thin blanket beneath him. So, here I am after all of these years, back in my home town. Jacob sighed, the reality hitting him square in the chest. My mother and father are literally just a couple of miles away from me. How I wish I could see them. Jacob smiled and pushed the thought from his head, there was no way he could see his parents without endangering himself and possibly Sai. "I've killed 198 people by accident," Jacob heard Sai say. Jacob stopped all thought besides that focused on Sai. What was that about? Why had Sai deemed it necessary to mention such a thing? Jacob decided to just close his eyes and stay silent, hoping Sai would forget about it. Slowly his faked sleep turned into real sleep. Sometime late in the night, Jacob awoke to Sai tossing and turning. Jacob figured it was just an uncomfortable night for her until he heard her start to talk. He couldn't quite make out the words of Sai but they were a scared tone. Jacob slowly rose and crept over to Sai. Suddenly, Sai jumped up, pinned him against a tree, and shoved a knife up against his throat. Jacob was so taken aback that he could not even put up a resistance. Then, as if awakening from a trance Sai released the pressure on the knife slowly and Jacob pushed the blade away. "Sai, what's the matter?" Jacob asked, slipping the knife out of her hand and tossing it to the ground. "Are you okay?" Suddenly, Jacob felt a strong urge to protect her and wrapped his arms around Sai in a brotherly embrace. |

"Sai, what's the matter? Are you okay?" Sai heard the words as if from a distance. her mind and body was frozen. She had almost hurt him, almost killed him. It had happened before. Who was to say if Jacob wasn't the next? Sai could go on killing and killing until there was only her. What was wrong with her?! Then she fell into Jacobs embrace and it was like a gate was open. She felt everything. Everything she had ever done. Regret welled from deep within her. Like a strong ocean it swept her away. What had she done in her life but kill? What did she had to live for? And then she cried. She cried and cried until there were no tears left in her eyes. Sai saw all the nameless faces that she had killed. And for what? Nothing. There was no reason. She was a monster. Then the doors were closed. The tears stopped dead. Sai stiffened in Jacobs embrace and pulled away. She hastily whipped her tears. Sai knew that it was all coming back. She couldn't let it. The...episodes left her feeling empty and depressed. However they also glimpsed what she really was. A monster. And though she might not be able to feel that pain of it always, she knew it to be true. It only fortified her choice. "Sorry. We have a job to do. Get a few hours rest. I'll keep watch." Her voice was monotone. Sai turned before Jacob could answer. There were likely to be guards around and they shouldn't be ambushed. Her mind had gone totally practical and focused. Sai looked around, she noted every place that they could hide, run to, or be attacked from. The rest of the night past without incedent. Sai waited and watched...and focused on the days ahead. |

As sobs rocked Sai's body, Jacob ran his hand over her hair brunette hair. It was amazing the amount of tears that had, and were still coming out of Sai's eyes. The girl who had previously shown no emotion was now a crying wreck in Jacob's arms. Sai definitely had a much more troubled past than Jacob had at first realised. Jacob was amazed that she had kept it in for the three days that he had known her. Maybe that was why it was so vilent now that it was coming out. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, Sai's crying stopped. Jacob felt her stiffen in his arms, signalling that he embrace was over. Jacob unwrapped his arms from Sai and she pulled away from him leaving his shoulder wet. Sai wiped the tears from her face and Jacob nearly laughed in disbelief. How could someone go, so fast, from one emotion to the next? "Sorry. We have a job to do. Get a few hours rest. I'll keep watch." Sai said in a cold, unemotional voice, the only evidence of the girl who had been crying her eyes out just moments ago were the silver streaks left by the tears on her face. Then, with a quick turn, not leaving Jacob any room to say anything, Sai walked a couple of feet away from Jacob. Sighing, Jacob looked at his blanket on the cold, hard ground. It would be next to impossible to get to sleep and even if he did it would be a fitfull night and would do him no good. Jacob sat down next to the pit of coles that had been a fire the previous evening. Picking up a long stick, Jacob stirred the embers exposing them to the air. The coles flared red and soon, with a handful of leaves and a few sticks Jacob had a small fire going, just enough to keep the chill of the night away. "Why don't you come over here? There's a warm fire and me," Jacob said jokingly. "You can see almost as good from here as you can from there. Besides, if we are found out there is little possibility of escaping even if we did fight the initial attackers off." |

"You can see almost as good from here as you can from there. Besides, if we are found out there is little possibility of escaping even if we did fight the initial attackers off." It was a logical conclusion, Sai had to admit. Even as much as she would like to skip the tedious explination. Maybe Jacob would have to prudence not to ask though. Sai didn't want any accidents this time. She sighed and turned. Sai contemplated the scene before her for a moment before striding over on her long legs and sitting down across from Jacob. Her green eyes blazed in the firelight. It's dancing shadows gave her pale-skinned face an odd, unreal quality. Her hazel hair rippled down her back as she hunched closer to the fire. The warmth was more welcome then Sai would have guessed. It dispelled her memories of painful times, and thawed her icy heart...a little. Sai rolled her head on her neck to get out the kinks of the night. It cracked loudly and Sai grimaced. Then she turned to Jacob. She stared straight at him for a while before she opened her mouth to speak. "Tell me about yourself Jacob," she said. It was mostly out of desire to turn the subject away from herself, but part was genuine curiousity. Sai would be spending a lot more time with this man, why not get to know him. Get to know what his motivation might be, what he might do in certain situations. Maybe even get to know what made him angry, and what would drive him away from her. |

Jacob gazed hopefully at Sai, wanting her to come and join him the fire. Then, with a sigh, she walked across the way, the light of the fire reflecting in her eyes. She is very pretty, Jacob thought to himself, vaguely reminded of his mother's friends in Galbatorix's court, as she sat down. Then with a roll of her neck, Sai's joints let out a series of loud pops leaving a expression of pain and relief on Sai's face. Jacob smiled, thinking about how un-lady-like that was. However, he remembered that Sai was far from the typical lady, she was tough and, in her actions, like a man. As Sai turned towards Jacob her also turned towards her wanting so bad to ask questions but not wanting to stir up any emotions. After a little bit, Jacob turned his gaze back to the fire until Sai spoke to him. "Tell me about yourself, Jacob," she said simply. "Hmm," Jacob said stalling for a little bit of time as he thought about what to say. "Well, my parents are nobles. I had two brothers and a sister. My oldest brother was killed in The Battle of the Burning Plains, my youngest is a squire to knight as far as I know, and my sister is probably married by now." Jacob paused remembering how his sister had hated being betrothed to the young, arrogant lord and how his brother had wanted so much to follow in Jacob's footsteps. "That pretty much sums up my family. I always wanted to be a knight, mostly for the glory. I saw my first combat at fourteen and eventually became a full fledged knight." A flash of memory of the night he had been deemed worthy to become a knight jumped to the front of Jacob's mind. Saving the men trapped, praying all night, and then taking his oaths the next day. Then he continued, "I fought in the Battle of the Burning Plains and then almost after that was sent to the Spine to rout a band of Urgals who were causing some trouble to Kuasta. That is when I met the girl I told you about and from there you know what happened." "So now you know more about me, what about you." Jacob hesitated wanting to aske about the '198 people she had killed by accident.'" Knowing that his mind would not be at ease until he unraveled that mystery Jacob decided to ask her. "Also, I don't mean to pry or stir up any emotions, but what was that you said about killed people on accident." |

Sai listened calmly to Jacobs story. It was an interesting one, but not one that Sai had never heard before. Somehow though, she never got tired of hearing it. The knights and ladies, the battles. The families. She remembered Cey used to read her stories of knights like Jacob. The were brave and chivalrous. Sai looked up at Jacob. He looked like a knight. He was very tall and had a handsome face. Sai had always pictured the knights in her stories to look like Jacob. He was also brave and chivalrous. He's a good person, Sai realized. To the core. She should have never brought him. Good people had been tainted before because of Sai. "So now you know more about me, what about you. Also, I don't mean to pry or stir up any emotions, but what was that you said about killed people on accident." Sai studies Jacob again. She could lie to him. She'd done it before. Somehow Sai couldn't bring herself to. Jacob deserved the truth, or at least some of it. No one needed to hear more then that. However, was now the time to tell him. Sai didn't know how well Jacob could predict her and she didn't want him to mess up the plan being chivalrous. Sai looked away from the fire out at the city and the world around her. Why not? Why not tell him everything? No. Sai pushed the thought away. There was no way she was going to tell him everything. She was barely going to tell him anything. Sai looked back at him, sizing him up. How much to tell him... "A lot have things have happened to me. Especially because I've been like this," she gestured to her body. "Always fighting and never feeling. When I was a child, still training, I had two friends. The only friends I've ever had. I almost felt something. We were sent to guard the border." At that moment Sai paused and rocked a little on her log. A large expanse, a tall tower, excitement. Sai tensed then rocked again. Blood, pain, training. She jerked her head. She should never have brought up those memories. A room full of knifes and a table with straps...to hold you down. Sai gasped. Her eyes were wide. Then she forced herself to relax. She had only stopped her story a moment ago. She could do this. Sai willed herself to go on. Now that it was coming out, she felt better and worse. No. There was no way she could tell him. Sai closed her eyes and let the remembered pain wash over her for a second...then it was gone. She looked up at Jacob. "But there gone now," she said quickly. "It's just when I have...fits of emotion. I can get angry sometimes. Then I can't stop myself. All the pent up rage," Sai shivered. She couldn't even remember what she had done most of the time. Then she sun peeked over the edge of the horizon. Just that small amount brought Sai back to reality. What was she doing her talking?! There was a job to be done. She stood quickly and brushed off her pants. "Ok Jacob, lets go into the city." Then she set about the camp, packing. She had a lot to do in a very short time. |

Jacob watched Sai's eyes flicker, quickly thinking about what to tell him or where to start. Finally, after a few second, Sai spoke. "A lot have things have happened to me. Especially because I've been like this," she gestured to her body. "Always fighting and never feeling. When I was a child, still training, I had two friends. The only friends I've ever had. I almost felt something. We were sent to guard the border." As Jacob listened to her struggle to tell the story, he felt bad. He had done exactly what he had meant not to do, stir up her emotions. When she was done, Sai began rocking on the log she was sitting on. Jacob looked into her eyes, waiting for her to settle down a bit more before he apologized. Then she gasped and her eyes got real wide and Jacob wondered what was going on in her mind. Then, noticeably calming, Sai returned Jacob's gaze. "But there gone now," she said quickly. "It's just when I have...fits of emotion. I can get angry sometimes. Then I can't stop myself. All the pent up rage," Sai shivered. "I'm... sorry. For everything..." Jacob felt horrible for having brought up those painful emotions in Sai. Then, as the sun shed its first bands of light onto the earth, Sai stood up and brushed herself off. Knowing what Sai was thinking, Jacob also stood up and brushed himself off. "Okay Jacob, lets go into the city." As the sun rose into the morning sky they packed everything, which wasn't much, and covered the dead fire with dirt. When everything was done, they climbed onto their refreshed, saddled horses. Without a word spoken, they set off at a trot for the city a league and a half away. With the sun still relatively low in they sky they neared Uru'baen. Jacob took a big breath and slowly let it out. "Here we go," He said quietly to himself. They brought the horses to a walk before they got too close to the gate, leaving a long, nerve racking journey to the open city gate. Would they notice Jacob? After all, he had lived here for so long and made such a departure that they were bound to recognize him. But soon his fears were put at ease, at least a little, as the guards let them slip pass into the teeming city. "Where to?" |

"I'm... sorry. For everything..." Sai paused momentarily in her small amount of packing. Sorry. For the first time she wished she could be sorry for putting him through this. She shook herself and continued on. -------------------------------- As they neared the city Sai wondered. How long had it been since Jacob had been here? Would someone recognize him? All the way to the gate Sai's mind ran through the situations that might happen and how they might be traversed. But her worry was in vain. They pasted through the gates without incident. "Where to?" Jacob asked as they pasted inside the walls. Sai looked around at him. "Follow me," she commented then pulled her horse to the left and trotted off, not waiting for a response. Sai directed her horse through the winding streets near the wall. Here was were people were doing worse, though here in Uru' baen that was relative. By Sai's reasoning everyone here was very well off. She led Jacob down a side alley and they were on one of the main road. They turned right and began to near the tall, elegant houses of the nobles near the center of the city. They past through them, talking to no one, and into the far section of the city. On their right were army shelters, on there left were a few shops and houses. Sai turned left and followed a long twisting path through the houses. There weren't as many people here, but still enough for them to pass unnoticed. Finally Sai stopped at a small red colored house next to a small bakery. Sai swung off her horse and tied it safely to a post outside the house. Then she motioned for Jacob to follow her. Sai stepped up the door and knocked twice. From inside the house you could hear a person moving around. Then a tall, gray haired woman opened the door. She looked at Sai, then smiled. "It's good to see you Sai, but you know what I need before you come in." Sai nodded and slipped a hand down her shirt. As she brought it back up she was holding a silver necklace with a small silver oak leaf. As the woman saw it she embraced Sai. When they parted the woman turned to Jacob. "Hello, I'm Locke. Whats your name?" ((Okay, I'm just pausing here. You don't have to post much I just thought it would be a nice brake for you know comment before we have a lengthy conversation with Locke.)) |

Jacob turned his hosre to follow Sai into the city. Every time they passed something familiar to Jacob, a twinge of sadness pulsed in his stomach. His whole life had been here, now if anyone to recognize him, it would spell disaster. They passed houses of nobles whose children he had played with as a kid. They passed his favorite climbing tree, his parent's house, and then the baracks where he had lived as a soldier. Everynow and then, Jacob saw someone he knew, so he turned his head away but he longed to say a greeting to them. Finally, the trip down memory lane ended as they stopped in front of a small, red house. Jacob followed Sai's lead, getting off of his horse and hitching it to the post. When Sai walked up to the house, Jacob hung back a few feet from her, taking in his surroundings. There was nothing out of the ordinary, just houses, a few shops, and more houses. As an elderly lady opened the door, Jacob noticed the scent of baking bread coming from the bakery next door. I could get used to this, Jacob thought as Sai and the woman went through the normal hellos and then the neccesary motions to prove their identities. Then the woman turned to Jacob and said, "Hello, I'm Locke. Whats your name?" Jacob turned his eyes upon the woman and smiled. "My name is Jacob," he replied, not wanting to give his last name, he just couldn't quite trust the woman enough. "It's nice to meet you," Jacob said as he took her hand and kissed it. |

"My name is Jacob, it's nice to meet you," Jacob said as he took her hand and kissed it. Sai smirked slightly. Locke beamed. "This ones more charming then the last! Where'd you pick him up?" She led them into the house. There was a pleasant foyer. A staircase led upstairs but Locke led them down a hall to a kitchen. It was large and full of pots, pans, and trays. Locke looked around, slightly embarrassed. "Sorry about the mess, I like to cook." "It's fine Locke. What food miracle have you created today?" Sai asked. She had gotten better and faking emotions. It was easy around Locke though for she knew about her and didn't care. Somehow, with the pressure gone it was easier to channel the small amount of emotion she had. "Coffee cake in the oven," Locke said, smiling and sitting at a small round table in the center of the room. Sai sat down next to her and sighed. It was nice to be here. "But Sai, I know your not just here for my health and happiness. I've got all sorts of gossip and information for you." Locke said all this enthusiastically. Off all the people Sai knew she loved her job the most. Locke simple collected gossip and information from the city. She was a cook in a nobles home. Even people not in the Varden would come to her if they wanted to know anything. Sai smiled at her. "That would be lovely Locke," she responded. Locke leaned forward and began to speak. "Well, the merchant your after is called Rodger. Wife, two daughters. He isn't a family man however, you can't get it him through them. He keeps a mistress with him when he leaves on trips. He's gotten some list of people helping us. He'll be alone in his house tonight except for two trusted guards. They won't be hard to take care off, they drink at a tavern I know people at. Anyway, you'll need to take him out. Then get the list and a necklace. Both should be in the office. Also, I'm ready for your plan. Though are you sure?" Locke spoke all of this slightly monotone. Towards the end of her speech she spoke concernedly. Sai instantly straightened from her relaxed position. She had decided, that was all there was to it. "Thank you Locke, and yes, I'm sure. Please don't worry about me." Locke nodded thoughtfully. Then continued speaking. "Very well, Sai. The necklace will be hard to get out. It may or may not be enchanted. Once you have it you'll have to be careful. You'll need to be out of the city as soon as possible, though Rodger doesn't have a family he does have employees who will notice his absence. You'll have to find a way to leave, they won't let you without papers. Also, there will be many people after that necklace, so you'll have to move quickly." Those last pieces of information were directed more towards Jacob then to Sai. Sai however was still paying attention. She nodded and relaxed a little. All of Locke's information had been most helpful. Now, all she had to do was go through with the plan. "Thank you Locke. How much time do we have until he's alone?" "Until right after dust. Then he'll be all yours. After, you come straight back here, ok?" Locke said, she looked concerned like a mother. Sai nodded. "Sounds good." |

Jacob followed behind Sai as they made their way through the house to the kitchen. It was cluttered with dirty pots, mixing bowls, pans, any and every kitchen utensil imaginable. Following Locke and Sai's lead, he sat down at the table as Sai and Locke made a little small talk and then jumped right into discussion about the reason for Sai's visit. Jacob listened intently to the information that Locke was giving out. He hoped he could figure out what his part in the thing was. He was surprised when Locke seemingly directed her words to him. However by the time Locke had finished, Jacob was still utterly confused by the whole thing. "So basically all we need to do is take out two body guards, kill a guy, take his necklace and a list?" Jacob turned to Sai, "and what exactly is 'your' plan and what is my part in this whole thing? Do I just need to accompany you and watch out for danger?" Jacob quieted as he waited for an explanation but remembered something else. "Also, what happens if this necklace is enchanted and why do we need it in the first place?" Finally, with nothing else to say, Jacob leaned back in his chair, his mouth quiet but his mind louder than anyone could talk. |

Do I just need to accompany you and watch out for danger? Also, what happens if this necklace is enchanted and why do we need it in the first place?" Sai sighed. Jacob was unusually full of questions. She turned to him. She would explain what she could. "Yes that is basically the gist. He's overconfident becuase of our lack of responce up until now. He's not the brightest bulb. You can accompany as you like on the theft and murder part, I usually work alone but I will not stand in your way if you want to come. Also the necklace in most likely enchanted but not in a way that is likely to stop us, more likely burn us or simple remember our touch so that when we are caught he can prove it was us. As I said he is overconfident. And I don't know why we need it. I'm the ideal theif, I don't get courious or care about killing." Sai turned back to Locke, not giving Jacob another word. "Thank you for this. I wonder if we could stay with you? I would put you in danger." "My job puts me in danger. Don't worry about it. There's a guest room upstairs. I have to work in an hour. You two may stay there. As I will not likely see you before you go," Locke stood up and hugged Sai. Sai returned it. Locke quietly whispered in her ear. "Good luck, my neice." Then she had turned away, back to her kitchen and Sai was stridding away. Sai was tired and wanted to lay down and sleep more then anything. She walked quickly up the stairs. Jacob was likely to follow, but she wouldn't make him, he could do what he like before and after they got the necklace and list. But she had to get them first. As she reached the landing she turned right and walked into a medium sized room. There was a large bed in the middle. Sai hadn't thought about this until now, they would have to sleep in the same bed. No matter. She walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. She slide her boots off and sighed, wiggling her tows. She intended to rest... until tonight. |

Jacob looked at Sai, "alright," he said as he realised that she had not answered his question about 'her' plan. However, Jacob just shrugged it off, it probably was just a more in depth way to get the necklace, kill the guards, or something. Besides, Sai had already started talking to Locke. Barely catching any of what the two women said, Jacob watched as they spoke. Then they both rose, hugging with Locke whispering something to Sai. Then Locke walked back over to the kitchen and Sai walked away. Not wanting to sleep quite yet, Jacob just sat at the table thinkng things over in his mind. Finally, his exhaustion and hope for a bed overcame him and remembering Locke saying something about a guest room, Jacob rose from the table and went in the direction that Sai had gone. When Jacob reached the top of the stairs, he looked around. Which room was the guest room? Finally with no way to reason it out, he resorted to trying every room. After two rooms, Jacob found the one with Sai laying on the bed and sighed. No bed for him, however even if Sai had offered it to him he would have declined. So Jacob searched the dresser finding a couple of blankets, took a pillow from the bed, and lay down on the floor to catch a little sleep. |

Sai rolled over in her bed. Her sleep was disterbing and not relaxing. There as so much pain. She had caused it. So much off it. Death and sorrow, poverty and hardship. She had done it simply and efficantly. Her eyeballs raised under her eyelids. She was running, something was chasing her. She could run fast enough, her legs were moving too slowly. It was catching up. Then a wave of nausia and pain filled her. She couldn't go any further, incompasitated by the fire that seemed to fill her. She fell to the ground, writhing. Sai woke, shaking. She sat up and groaned. It was time to leave. She looked over, Jacob was laying on the floor. Sai stood and slide her boots on again. She walked over to Jacob and shook him awake. "Come on its time to go," she said simple. Sai walked over to the door and stepped outside. The house was quiet. She walked to the front door, Jacob would follow if he wanted. Her mind was totally focused. She had pushed away the frights of the night and any other distractions that might have hindered her, now she was totally centered on the job ahead. She slipped into the shadows that lined the streets and strode off quickly, and silently. Soon she reached a large house, it wasn't elegant but just large and imposing. Sai walked up to the window and piered inside. The man was sitting at a large table, stuffing himself with dinner. Two men stood in the corner of the room. "I can pick the lock on the door, then I can deal with the three men if you would go up the to office and get the goods. Right?" Sai asked, turning to Jacob. -To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. -I don't have time every morning to put on make-up, I need that time to clean my rifle. -I've always wanted to cultivate modesty, but I've been far to busy. | |

Gig 'em Aggies!!!!
|
Jacob woke with a jolt as Sai shook him. "Alright, he said standing up. He quickly put his boots on and grabbed his belt as he ran after Sai. Jacob caught up to Sai as she was walking out of the door. Constantly, he checked his surroundings and then mentally berated himself for being so jumpy and tense. He looked at Sai, she was calm, focused on the tasks ahead of her. However, she had done this countless times and Jacob had never had to be this sneaky. Soon the two reached a large house and Jacob followed as Sai peered through the window. Noting the three men and their places, Jacob looked through a doorway in the house which showed a view of a staircase. He was glad he had seen the staircase as Sai told him to sneak upstairs and steal the goods. "Alright, be careful," he said as they walked up to the door. Jacob waited, leaning against the house as Sai picked the lock. After what seemed like hours, the door swung open and Jacob secretly wished he knew how to pick locks. Jacob drew his sword, just in case and walked in, quietly closing the door behind himself and Sai. He quickly sighted the stairs, and with a nod, he started for them. As quietly as he could, Jacob walked up the stairs as Sai presumably made her way to the dining room. Jacob got to the second floor when he heard a groan of pain, knowing that somewhere, Sai had just killed a man. With their presence know, Jacob sprinted for the closest door, which was luckily the office. The list lay on the table so Jacob rushed over and grabbed it. However, it took him a little longer to find the necklace which was in a drawer of the desk. Remembering that it was unknown if the necklace was enchanted, Jacob timidly reached out with his sword and slid it over the blade. With both of his items secure, Jacob rushed down the stairs, slipping the necklace into his pocket, and readying his sword for battle. |
